How to raise awareness about Early language learning among parents - kindergarten teachers' advice

Integration and Migration Foundation Our People (Haridusamet Integratsiooni ja Migratsiooni Sihtasutuse Meie Inimesed) organised an Piccolingo in Action event on 12  June 2010 at the picturesque resorts of Nelijärve and Jaanioja (Estonia). 60 kindergarten teachers shared their experience on early language learning (ELL) by taking part in lectures, handcraft, workshops and visits.

Languages open doors

Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou is backing an international declaration calling for more awareness-raising in schools and universities about the importance of language learning and career opportunities for interpreters, translators and other skilled language professionals. The declaration was issued following a meeting of the heads of language and conference services of 76 international organisations at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris from 21-23 June 2010.

23rd Session of the Council of Europe Ministers of Education Conference

Under the heading “Education for Sustainable Democratic Societies: the Role of Teachers”, the 23rd session of the Standing Conference of European Ministers of Education was an opportunity to discuss these issues and consider the role of education and, more specifically, teachers, in finding common, viable and effective solutions to the challenges facing European societies at present, such as the increasing diversity of our societies.

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) involves teaching a curricular subject through the medium of a language other than that normally used. The subject can be entirely unrelated to language learning, such as history lessons being taught in English in a school in Spain. CLIL is taking place and has been found to be effective in all sectors of education from primary through to adult and higher education. Its success has been growing over the past 10 years and continues to do so.
