Gang i sproget - Walking in The language

09/05/2011

The Danes don't have a good image of their mother language and that is the reason why the Danish Language Council has initiated the campaign 'Gang i Sproget' (Walking in The language) to araise awareness about the Danish language.

Several university studies conducted among the Danes and the Swedes have shown that the Danes not only believe that other languages are better than their language. They have difficulties to understand that someone wants to learn it. Sabine Kirchmeier-Andersen's mother tongue is actually German - she has chose the Danish language when she was nine years old. She does not understand the Danish anti mother language attitude: "The Danish language is very interesting, and produces beautiful sounds. To say that some languages are uglier than others is always a matter of taste", she said.

The website 'Gang i Sproget'

On the website 'Gang i sproget' you can test your language age, watch videos and read about language events. The campaign focuses on what a language is, what impact it has on each of us, and our social and cultural development, and why and how language is changing.

The campaign's goal is to foster acceptance and respect for different kinds of language variation, such as dialect, artistic language, foreign languages, youth language, jargon, spoken language, written language, sign language, etc.
