E-commerce: which languages are most lucrative?

If you offer services in English alone, you stand to lose up to two thirds of potential online sales. This is the conclusion of a recent survey by Translated, a language service provider.

Translated has published yearly statistics since 2005 to rank languages in terms of their online market potential. The ranking is based on data on the internet population, its presence on internet, country of origin and GDP per internet capita.

The five languages that top the list are English, simplified Chinese, Spanish, Japanese and German. If your website is translated into the first three languages on this list, you can reach 50% of global online purchasing power.

These results are in line with European Commission studies on SMEs in Europe which demonstrate that 'companies with a consistent language strategy have increased sales turnover by 10 to 25 %'. Translated provides translation and localisation of texts, software and websites.
