Council adopts conclusions on language competences to enhance mobility

21/12/2011

EU Education Ministers took a firm stand on languages at their latest meeting in Brussels on 28 November.

They put forward their views and ambitions in a document which was the fruit of an intensive collaboration between the European Commission and the Polish Presidency. A key statement in the document is that "a good command of foreign languages is a key competence essential to make one's way in the modern world and labour market. Multilingualism is not only part of the European heritage but also a chance to develop a society which is open, respectful of cultural diversity and ready for cooperation".

On that basis, the Council of the European Union adopted a large number of recommendations for the European Commission and the Member States with the aim to promote language teaching and learning in all sectors of education and training.
