22/06/2011 - 25/06/2011

The 13th International Conference on Minority Languages (ICML) focusing on 'Institutional Arrangements" will take place on 22-25 June 2011 in Flensburg Fjord (German-Danish border).

The general theme of the conference “Institutional Arrangements” refers to the issues of language maintenance, development and transfer, which in most cases happens nowadays through institutions – educational institutions such as schools, sports organisations, cultural organisations and activities, official bodies, the media and other agents.

The following questions and many more will be discussed in the separate sections during the conference:

  • What kind of institutions have minorities developed in order to protect and promote their languages?
  • What are the roles of such arrangements for language-based minority identities?
  • Would minority languages survive without such institutions and, if so, what alternative strategies are there?
  • How about financial aspect of institutionalized language support?

The language of the conference is English. There will be no translation facilities.
